English Language Arts

The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

Waipahu Elementary students use McGraw-Hill’s Reading Wonders as a resource for grades K-6. This program was adopted by the Department of Education because it was designed specifically for the Common Core State Standards.  Our reading program provides support for building a strong foundation in reading, accessing complex text, finding and using text evidence, engaging in collaborative conversations. Students are able to access the resource digitally or in print form. Grade levels supplement instruction and resources with Wonders ELD, Wonderworks, i-Ready, Kid Biz, Teen Biz, Smarty Ants, Orton Gillingham Approach (Basic and Morphology), and other reading resources to meet the needs of all learners. Reading instruction is differentiated within the homeroom, to address varying ability levels and experiences of our students. Ongoing student assessments and Progress Monitoring are conducted throughout the year to ensure success for every student.
